Dear Uncle Sam,
I know we’re cousins, but all the cousins and their friends call you Uncle Sam. I’m going with the flow. The last time I saw you, we were just kids, wrestling in your father’s backyard.
I hear you live a comfortable life in New Jersey and that you have become a big city liberal. I’m a country conservative, a Dakota realist. Is there any chance that we can see eye-to-eye when it comes to politics? If you are up to it, I’d like us to try. I’ll do my best to stay on topic, stick to the facts, and avoid utterances like the one below.

The first words out of my mouth when I heard you had become a liberal were “I hope he hasn’t become one of those hypocrites who curry social favor with words and an occasional publicized good deed. You know, one of those snobs who think words and feelings are a substitute for selfless actions. In our neck-of-the-woods, if a man needs a hand and we can lend it, we give it gladly, then go on about our business.”
Utterances like the one above, may make me feel good, but they don’t encourage us to work together for our common good.
It would be great if we can both look at political issues from our own points of view, discuss the issues rationally, and propose possible solutions.
It’s highly unlikely we will solve the world’s problems, but if we’re honest and we keep our sense of humor we may discover some common ground that we can share with friends and family.
Looking forward to your response
Al
