What should we expect from our Senators?
America’s founding fathers expected senators to be held to a higher standard and serve longer terms than elected officials. They were to be a stabilizing force, balancing the powers of the President, the courts and the House of Representatives. They were also expected to possess essential qualities.

| Independence | Originally, senators were chosen by state legislatures, rather than by popular vote, so they could resist temporary public passions and political pressure. |
| Knowledge of Government | They are expected to understand the Constitution, foreign affairs, and national finance. |
| Patriotism | Loyalty to the United States and the Constitution is considered essential. |
| Moderation | Senators are expected to calm political conflicts rather than inflame them. |
| Stability | Six-year terms are intended to provide continuity and prevent sudden swings in national policy. |
| Respect for the Constitution | Senators are expected to faithfully uphold and defend the Constitution. |
