Why We Must Think Carefully About Our New Government
Choosing to accept this constitution is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.
Remember, during big debates, people sometimes let their emotions take over, they honestly disagree because they think they are right. Others oppose ideas because they might lose power, money, or influence. Do not believe in rumors or follow the loudest voices. Read carefully, listen to both sides and think for yourself. Decide based on facts instead of fear.
You have a chance to do something that has rarely been done before. Most governments in history were created by kings, wars, or powerful rulers. Now ordinary people have the chance to choose their own government through discussion and voting. We Americans can show the world that free citizens can build a successful government by using reason instead of force.
This essay is only the beginning. In the essays that follow, I will explain why America needs to stay united. Why the Constitution creates a stronger government, leaves important powers to the state, and how the Constitution protects freedom. Please keep an open mind while you consider these ideas.
