Federalist No. 13

Original Author: Alexander Hamilton

A single national government is cheaper and more efficient than 13 separate governments

If each state becomes its own country, it will be very expensive. Each state will need to pay for: Its own government staff, its own buildings, its own systems for taxes and laws, and its own administration. That means a lot of repeated costs.

If we are 13 separate countries: There will be 13 tax systems, 13 sets of government offices and 13 groups of officials doing similar work. This wastes money and resources.

If the states stay united: There will be only one national government that handles big responsibilities and shares the costs across all states. A united system helps people avoid unnecessary costs. Saving money in government is important because: Taxes can stay lower, resources can be used more wisely, and more money can go to important needs like defense and trade.

Instead of 13 separate systems, there will be one organized system working for everyone. This system will make everything clearer and more organized. There will be one set of rules for everyone. One government to handle national problems and make the country run more smoothly.
