Will a strong national government use its military power to control the states or take away their freedom
Some Americans are afraid that a national government might become too powerful. It could use the military to control the states. It might ignore the rights of the people, and it could act unfairly. They think a strong government could become dangerous.
This fear is not realistic because: The national government does not have unlimited power. It is limited by laws and rules. It depends on the people and the states. It must follow the Constitution. It cannot do whatever it wants.
A standing army (a permanent military) is necessary for protection. It is not as dangerous as people think because: It is controlled by the government and laws. It is not large enough to take over the country on its own. The people and states still have power and rights.
The states also help protect freedom because: They have their own governments, they manage local laws and issues, they act as a balance against the national government and make it harder for one group to take total control. This balance helps protect liberty.
A weak national government can be more dangerous than a strong one because: It cannot keep order, states might fight or ignore laws, there is no clear authority and chaos can spread. Strength, when controlled by rules, is safer than weakness.
The national government must be strong enough to protect the country, but it must also be limited by laws and the Constitution. States must also have power to protect freedom. This balance keeps both safety and liberty.
