What if the national government becomes too powerful? Can the people still protect their rights?
If the government ever becomes unfair or dangerous: The people can speak up, they can vote for new leaders, they can change laws through the system and they can resist unfair actions together. So, the government is never completely in control forever.
State and local governments help protect the people because they are closer to the citizens and can act quickly in local problems. They can stand up if the national government becomes unfair, and they provide another layer of protection. Power is shared, not concentrated in one place.
It will be very hard for a national government to control people by force because: The country is very large, people live in many different places, local governments are spread out, and citizens are numerous and connected. It will be impossible for a single government to control everything by force alone.
In a country like the United States: People are armed and organized, communities are spread out, state governments already exist, and the population is large. Because of this, it would be very difficult for any government to take away freedom completely.
Freedom is protected by the Constitution, elections, representatives, state governments sharing power, and the people themselves. This system creates many layers of protection.
People should not worry too much about a national government becoming all-powerful because: It is limited by laws, it depends on the people’s vote, it is balanced by state governments, and it is too large to control everything directly.
