Is the new Constitution giving the national government too much power?
Madison says the national government must have enough power to protect the country from enemies, keep peace between states, collect taxes for important needs, make and enforce laws. Without these powers, the country would not function well.
People fear that the government could become unfair, leaders might abuse power, and Freedom could be taken away.
These are real concerns, so the Constitution includes protections.
The Constitution prevents the government from becoming too powerful by listing specific powers the government is allowed to use It divides power between national and state governments by letting people elect their own leaders. It also provides checks and balances between branches of government to keep power from being concentrated in one place.
A good government needs balance, too little power = chaos and weakness, too much power = danger to freedom, and just the right amount = safety and order. The Constitution is designed to find that balance.
