How the Constitution limits government power so it does not become too strong or unfair.
Even though the national government needs power to do its job, it also needs limits to prevent it from taking too much control. The government is not allowed to ignore the rights of the people, or to become unfair or abusive. Power without limits can be dangerous.
The Constitution limits government power in several ways, it clearly lists what the national government is allowed to do. It leaves other powers to the states. It divides the government into branches that check each other, and it allows the people to vote for leaders. These rules help prevent any one group from becoming too powerful.
States also help protect freedom. They have their own governments. They can make local decisions. They act as a check on the national government, and they keep government closer to the people which adds another layer of protection.
If any government had unlimited power, it could take away rights, ignore laws, treat people unfairly or become too controlling.
Good government needs balance. It needs enough power to protect and govern the country, but not so much power that it becomes dangerous. It also needs a system of rules that keeps everything under control. The Constitution is built to create this balance.
