Why did the Constitution set the term of the House at two years instead of something shorter or longer?
If elections happen too often: leaders will not have enough time to learn their job, the government could be in a constant state of change, and laws could be rushed instead of carefully made. Very short terms can make government weak and chaotic.
If terms are too long: leaders may forget the people, they represent. They might become less responsible and less controllable. Long terms could reduce accountability and make the government feel distant.
A two-year term is a good middle ground. It gives representatives time to learn their job, keeps them close to voters, allows regular elections and accountability. It avoids constant instability. It is a balance between stability and control.
Governing is complicated. Leaders need time to understand laws. They need experience working with others, and they must learn how government functions. Leaders should not be replaced too quickly.
Two-year terms allow voters to replace leaders regularly, keep representatives responsible and citizens in control of government. The people still have the final say.
