Will representatives in Congress become selfish or ignore the people who elected them?
Representatives are chosen directly by voters. They depend on voters to keep their job, and they must listen to public opinion to get re-elected. They cannot ignore the people for very long.
Even if voters sometimes make mistakes, they learn from experience. Bad leaders can be replaced. Better candidates often replace weaker ones. Over time, the system improves leadership.
Even if representatives act out of self-interest, they still must please voters to keep their job. They must follow public opinion and avoid actions that anger the community. So, their own goals push them to serve the public.
Term lengths are limited. Elections happen regularly. Other branches of government provide checks, and the people always have the final vote. This reduces the chance of long-term abuse.
People are not perfect. Leaders are not perfect, but systems can still work well. The Constitution is built for real human behavior, not perfect people..
