What kind of power should the President of the United States have when it comes to making appointments?
When the President chooses (appoints) people for important jobs, such as Judges, Ambassadors (representatives to other countries), or High government officials, the Senate must approve his appointments. This creates a “check” on the President’s power.
Some people feared the President might choose unqualified friends, or power might become too centralized, or the system might be unfair. The Senate’s approval is a strong safeguard.
When two groups share power decisions are more carefully made, bad choices are less likely, and each side helps watch the other. This makes government stronger and safer.
