I enjoy discussing political policy and social issues with people who disagree with me. We rarely convince one another to switch sides; but we manage to turn many issues from black and white to gray. We can agree to disagree and depart as friends.
As a preschooler, I “wanted to know everything.” I would ask my mother question after question until she told me to go outside and play. Later, teachers taught me how to research questions and find my own answers. Professors encouraged me to form my own opinions by challenging other people’s ideas, opinions and beliefs. When I reached middle age, I behaved as if I knew everything. I am old now, and my children tell me “I don’t know anything”.
When my kids were preschoolers, they also wanted to know everything. They asked their endless questions and I (the one who thought he knew everything) said I was too busy and referred them to teachers for answers.
I don’t remember how old my kids were when they began challenging my opinions and beliefs. I remember feeling proud of them. They were learning to think for themselves. My feeling of pride slowly turned into anger when it became apparent, my kids were not being taught how to think; but being told what to think. They expressed contempt for our country. They said, “If we don’t follow Al Gore’s lead, our planet will be dead in 10 years”. They condemned Capitalism and extolled the virtues of socialism. My kids were being recruited by the “Mean Girls”. You know, the ones who refuse to listen to differing opinions, ostracize anyone that does, and invite only people who think like they do, to their party.
The Department of Education has established rules and regulations to protect and perpetuate the” Mean Girl” behavior throughout our country’s educational institutions. They have created a system that prevents lackluster and the grossly incompetent educators from being fired; a system that rewards rote learning and punishes common sense.
We have entrusted our children’s education to an army of brain-washed political pawns tasked with “preaching-not-teaching, indoctrinating-not educating”. It’s time to get the Federal government out of education and give control of the curriculum and the money back to parents and local school boards.
