For centuries our forefathers suffered at the hands of the czars.
Our Grandfathers summoned the courage to overthrow the Czars, only to be brutalized by Stalin
Our fathers survived Stalin only to live in poverty and fear of Khrushchev’s secret police.
Yeltsin gave us a taste of liberty.
It felt good and right.
Then Putin destroyed Yeltsin and our hope for freedom.
Now our children live as Russians have lived for centuries, oppressed by a wealthy dictator.
What is wrong with us? We Russians will fight for dictators, but not for ourselves. We will sacrifice for Party leaders but not for one another. We will drink, sing, dance and laugh at night; then cry “woe is me” in the morning.
Are we the equivalent of Chinese peasants? Property of the Party? The chairman’s slaves? Are we destined to be ruled by madmen forever? Will we ever live as free, self-governed men and women?
