A Hard Job to Fix a Broken System
We all saw that our government (under the Articles of Confederation) was not working well. The national government was weak, the states didn’t always cooperate, laws were not enforced well, and the country was not stable. There was no simple solution. It was time to try something new. So, we created the constitution.
It wasn’t an easy job. There were many disagreements. How strong should the national government be? How much power should the states keep? How should laws be made? How can we meet the different needs of different states? There was a lot of debate and confusion. It was like trying to fix a broken machine while it was running.
