Federalist No. 39

Original Author James Madison;

What Kind of Government Is the U.S. Becoming?

The United States is a federal system, which means power is shared between the national government and state governments, neither one has all the power, each level has its own responsibilities. It is like teamwork between two levels of government.

The U.S. is also a republic, which means they are NOT ruled by a king. The people choose their own leaders by voting. These leaders represent the people’s wishes. The people are in control.

The national government handles big issues (like defense and national laws). State governments handle local. Power is divided so no one part becomes too strong. This balance helps protect freedom. The Constitution is unique because it combines national strength with local control in a government by the people. Most governments in history had only one of these, but not all three.
