What happens when countries become rivals or enemies
Countries are not always peaceful with each other. Even if leaders want peace, countries can still have problems because of: Money and trade, power and influence, land and borders, different interests and goals. When countries are separate, they often think about their own success first. This can lead to arguments and even war.
If the 13 states become separate countries, they would likely: compete against each other, disagree about trade and money, fight over land or borders, become suspicious of each other. Even if they started out friendly, history shows that neighbors who are separate countries often become rivals.
One united country will prevent many of these problems. By staying together, they will: share one government, follow the same laws for trade and defense, not compete like enemies, and be more likely to stay peaceful. People and governments often want what is best for themselves and will compete with others to get it. It is a source of distrust. A strong united government will help control those problems and reduce conflict
