Separate countries
When countries (or states) are near each other, they often have more chances to disagree. Why? Because they share: borders, rivers, roads, trade routes, and natural resources like land and water. When people or countries are close together, small disagreements can easily turn into bigger problems.
If the 13 states became separate countries: they would compete for trade and money, disagree about borders and land, make different rules that cause confusion, and possibly become enemies over time. Even if they start out friendly, history shows that neighboring countries often become rivals.
The best way to prevent these problems is to stay a united country, with one national government. There will be one set of rules for everyone, states will not have to compete like separate nations, disagreements will be solved by law, not conflict, trade and travel will be easier and fairer. Instead of 13 separate governments, there will be one system helping everyone work together.
