Federalist No. 4

Original Author: John Jay

Threats from other nations

Countries around the world often compete for: Land, Trade (buying and selling goods), power, influence, safety, and security. If America is split into many small countries, other nations might: try to control trade with them, pressure them into unfair deals, take advantage of their disagreements, possibly even attack or threaten them. But if the states stay united, other countries will see a strong nation that is harder to push around.

A single united country will: be stronger in wars or conflicts, be more respected by other nations, be better able to protect its people, and make fairer agreements with other countries. Unity will make America safer and more powerful, in a peaceful way, not by attacking others, but by being strong enough that others would not want to attack us.
